Hays, University Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Pittsburgh, talks about the history of the National Forests in the United States, the changes in their management, and the development of “ecological forestry.” Professor Hays has written widely in American History, his 1959 study Conservation and the Gospel of Efficiency: The Progressive Conservation Movement, 1890-1920 was a major contribution to American political history and now also regarded as a founding document in the field of environmental history. More recently, Professor Hays is the author of Wars in the Woods: The Rise of Ecological Forestry in America (2007), and The American People and the National Forests: The First Century of the U.S. Forest Service (2009).
